What is the number of Ukrainians who decided to work in Europe?

There are plenty of publications and media articles about the facts of Ukrainians migrating from Ukraine and going to work abroad to European Union and Norway. There is no official statistics how many Ukrainians decided to work in EU and most of such publications are based on emotions but not on specified data and facts. But using indirect sources it is not so hard to track the real dynamics of workers migration from Ukraine to the European Union and to predict future tendencies.

One of indirect sources is private transfers in foreign currency made from Europe to Ukraine which according statistics reached around $ 13.5 billion in three quarters of 2018. Interesting to mention, that sum of private foreign currency transfers is many times more than all foreign investments that came to Ukraine during the same period. Need to understand that these money was the key factor in saving of Ukrainian currency market and the stabilization of Ukrainian economical state and that these money from abroad helped more than direct foreign investments or government loans.  . Therefore, it is not surprising that the export of labor is one of the most important factors of the economy, and it will remain in the coming decades, whether we like it or not.

And the second one source to know about how many citizens of Ukraine live or work in the EU is to use Eurostat data.

Eurostat provides data that 661 000 citizens of Ukraine received a residence permit in the EU during year of 2017. During the same year 580 000 citizens of Ukraine received a residence permit to work in the EU. Important to mention that around 23 000 citizens of Ukraine received a residence permit for the purpose of studying in the EU. In European countries there thinking that Ukrainians in tend to live in EU and they thinking to bring their families one day, but the reality shows that despite the migration laws are quite friendly for Ukraine nationals, Ukrainians better transfer their income to Ukraine and develops their family life in Ukraine. Living with family in most of EU countries are much more expensive then in Ukraine. Therefore, the majority of Ukrainian works in the EU and choose to spend money in Ukraine. It is no doubt that European salary is more profitable to invest in economy of Ukraine because of price levels and differences of several times in salaries.

To sum up, it is needed to mention that decreasing of restrictions to work and travel to Europe for Ukrainians gives benefits both for EU and Ukraine. Ukraine gets huge financial impact from foreign money transfers and European counties are happy that receiving qualified work power and solving their problems with vacancies in various economic sectors.
